The University of Tampa’s major in cybersecurity is a cutting-edge program that teaches students to protect the confidentiality, availability and integrity of information and information systems that support modern organizations. Students receive a comprehensive education that focuses on both the fundamentals of information systems as well as advanced topics in areas such as network security, cryptography, risk management, security governance, business continuity, security architecture, physical security and critical infrastructures. A minor in cybersecurity and a master's in cybersecurity are also offered.
A key feature of UT’s cybersecurity major is that it prepares students for professional security certifications and designation, such as the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) exam. The program also gives students extensive hands-on experience using industry standard tools in a modern cybersecurity lab.
Demand for certified security professionals is expected to rise as global commerce and modern society becomes increasingly dependent on information systems and related technologies. According to the U.S. News and World Report and the Cisco 2014 Annual Security Report, the average salaries nationally are $91,210, and there is a worldwide shortage of information security professionals at 1 million openings, even as cyberattacks and data breaches increase each year. UT’s innovative program prepares students to be leaders in the growing cybersecurity field and employed by prominent organizations worldwide.
The new cybersecurity lab is a state-of-the-art facility where students have access to the latest advances in technology. The lab provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with firewalls, servers or setting up virtual machines on one of the 60 work stations.
