The University of Tampa will dedicate David A. Straz Jr. Hall with a
ribbon-cutting on Tuesday, May 24, at 6:30 p.m., for Straz’s many contributions
and generous philanthropy to UT.
The name will adorn the building
heretofore known as Stadium Place, a 480-bed, eight-story residence hall at 321
N. Boulevard that opened in the fall of 2003.
Active in supporting higher
education and the visual and performing arts, Straz is chairman-elect of The
University of Tampa Board of Trustees and chairman of the Lowry Park Zoo
Foundation.
He was elected to the Marquette University Board of Trustees
in 1985, served as vice chair from 1993 to 1997, and served as chairman of the
board from 1997 to 2001. He is a 1965 graduate of Marquette, which has named a
residence hall and its college of business in his honor.
Straz is known
internationally as the Hon. David A. Straz Jr., ambassador at large and honorary
consulate general to the Republic of Liberia. He also is Commissioner of the
Florida Transportation Commission, and is on the boards of Fifth Third Bank, the
Metropolitan Opera in New York City, and the Alliance for Responsible Cuba
Policy in Washington, DC.
