The University of Tampa’s John H. Sykes College of Business will announce the
winners of the Florida Family Business of the Year Awards on Friday, May 14, at
the Vaughn Center. Panel sessions on issues important to family business leaders
begin at 8:30 a.m., and a luncheon begins at noon.
Gov. Bush has declared May 14 “Florida Family Business Day.” The awards,
presented annually by the Sykes College of Business, honor the best of Florida’s
family-owned, family-operated businesses. Criteria include, among others, the
innovation of the business’s strategies and practices, expression of positive
family values in the business, the quality of the link between the family and
the business, contributions to the community, and overall growth and
viability.
Five categories are awarded: large (more than 250 employees), medium (50-250
employees), small (fewer than 50 employees), heritage (more than 50 years) and
new (less than 10 years). A community service award also is presented, and may
be awarded to a nominee from any category.
