University of Tampa President Ronald L. Vaughn and 16 faculty and staff
members joined some 400 student volunteers pitching in at nonprofit
organizations across the Tampa Bay area. The number of participants far exceeded
expectations for this inaugural University-sponsored event.
"Into the Streets" began with a noon rally at the Falk Theater. Then, from
1-4 p.m., groups of students and faculty members dispersed to do tasks ranging
from cleaning and construction to landscaping and cooking.
President Vaughn worked with 16 students at the Haven Poe Runaway Center;
John H. Sykes College of Business Dean Joe McCann and 11 students helped at the
Mental Healthcare-Graham Home; and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean
Jeff Klepfer lent a hand with 48 student volunteers in "Coastal Cleanup #2" in
Clearwater.
Some of the other nonprofit organizations benefiting included Chiaramonte
Elementary School, Francis House, Hanna Oaks, Hudson Manor, Metropolitan
Ministries, Project LINK, Quest Inc., Ronald McDonald House, and the Humane
Society.
The student volunteers were incoming freshmen and orientation team leaders,
and the goal was to help them realize the importance of giving back to others in
the surrounding community.
