Canadian Artist Zachari Logan to Show Selected Drawings at UT

A Garden of Lines: Zachari Logan, Selected Drawings 2011–2016, an exhibition of selected drawings by renowned Canadian artist Zachari Logan, opens at The University of Tampa’s Scarfone/Hartley Gallery on Friday, Oct. 14. The public will have an opportunity to hear from and meet the artist at a gallery talk on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. and the opening reception on Friday, Oct. 14, from 7–9 p.m. The exhibition runs through Nov. 22.

Logan’s drawings on mylar combine incredibly intricate depictions of flora, with wildlife and the artist’s own body parts. These playful, and sometimes menacing, inventions recall the “grotesqueries” of Roman painting as well as medieval illuminated manuscripts. Logan also creates epic-scale pastels on black backgrounds, some of which use floral motifs, to create self-portraits, calling to mind the baroque portrait heads of Arcimboldo or, as Logan describes it, “rewilds his body as a queer embodiment of nature.”

Logan lives and works in Regina, Canada, and recently completed two residencies in New York at Wave Hill Botanical Gardens in the Bronx and the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) in Brooklyn. Logan has exhibited internationally, and his work is included in many Canadian public collections, as well as the Leslie-Lohman Museum in New York, where he showed his work in summer 2015.

The gallery is located on campus at the R.K. Bailey Art Studios, 310 N. Blvd. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. There is no charge for admission.
