Assistant Professor Scherer also teaches both national and international travel courses. Art 292: Art Immersion Travel Course takes students to New York City each spring, visiting contemporary and historical designers, firms and educational venues. Past trip highlights include visits with Milton Glaser, Pentagram, The Herb Lubalin Study Center in the Cooper Union, Pearlfisher, Two Arms Inc., Billboard Magazine and more. The international Art 295: Design and New Media Travel Course gives students a chance to journey abroad, visiting cities, schools and museums important to their discipline. Locations visited during the 2015 trip included Switzerland (Zurich and Basel), Austria (Vienna and Linz) and Germany (Dessau and Berlin). The upcoming 2017 trip will include England (London), France (Paris) and Switzerland (Zurich and Basel). These travel courses offer student a rich educational experience closely related to their studies, while also opening opportunities for networking and future professional development.
Career Specialties: Scherer specializes in various areas of graphic design, including typography, symbology, color theory, branding, packaging, publication and information design. As an active designer, past and present clients include College Art Association’s New Media Caucus, Museum of Science and Industry, American Express, South Tampa Chamber of Commerce, as well as many local and regional businesses. Scherer is also an active design researcher; her primary focus consisting in the areas of sustainable design and culture as it relates to visual communication.
Professional and Community Activities: Scherer is an active member of many field organizations, including AIGA, UCDA, CAA and SECAC. She is acting graphic design director for
-N, Journal of the New Media Caucus (CAA). She is published in the edited book,
Essentials of Teaching and Integrating Visual Media Literacy
(Springer 2015), and in the online journal,
Open Inquiry Archive
. Additionally, she is active in presenting scholarly work at both national and international conferences.
